In their final match together as doubles partners, Troy seniors Shado Garrett and Jesse Day won a third-place medal at the Class B-C state tennis tournament on Saturday in Missoula.

Garrett and Day defeated Valley Christian’s Morgan Parsons and Josiah Peterson, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the consolation championship.

The Trojan duo had their sights set on a state title this season but was knocked off course in the second round by Spencer Lewis and Jace Kimmet of Cut Bank, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Lewis and Kimmet went on to win the state title and judging by the scores, the second-round meeting appeared to basically be for the championship. Garrett and Day were the only opponents to push Lewis and Kimmet to three sets.

Garrett and Day received a first-round bye.

In the consolation bracket, Garrett and Day rolled past their Valley Christian opponents, 6-2, 7-5, and then advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 rout over a duo from Conrad.

Playing Cut Bank’s Nate Kavanagh and Jordan Hoof in the consolation semifinals, Garrett and Day fought to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory to advance for a date against Parsons and Peterson.

The No. 2 doubles team of Robb Higgins and Kody Hoffman also competed. In the first round, they lost 6-0, 6-2 to Cut Bank’s Kavanagh and Hoof. In the consolation bracket, they dropped a hard-fought decision to their Conrad opponents, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.

Creede Garcia advanced the furthest among the Troy singles players. Garcia opened with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cut Bank’s Dylan Johnston in the first round, 6-1, 6-2. Then after a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Calen King of Conrad, Garcia rebounded to defeat Nate Norberg of Valley Christian, 6-2, 6-2. In the consolation quarterfinals, Garcia dropped a 7-6, 6-0 decision to Loyola Sacred Heart’s Cade Cross.

Jake Higgins made it to the consolation’s second round. Higgins received a first-round bye before losing to Loyola’s Cross, 6-1, 6-0. In the consolation bracket, Higgins had to face teammate Pat Hickman. Higgins took the win, 6-4, 6-3, and was then eliminated by Mission’s Wyatt McCollum, 7-6, 6-4.

Hickman and Brandon Rebo also competed. Hickman lost in round one to Loyola’s Erich Dieziger and was eliminated by Jake Higgins. Rebo advanced past the first round on a forfeit and dropped matches to Cut Bank’s Carl Matt, 6-0, 6-0, and Cut Bank’s Johnston, 6-4, 6-3.
