LHS tracksters tune up for stretch run
The Libby High School boys and girls track teams tuned up for this week’s divisional meet with a home dual on Friday against Flathead.
Head coach Ed Tabis was pleased with how the team has progressed this season.
“We had some good performances, a lot of personal-bests,” Tabis said. “The kids are continuing to improve.”
Among the athletes that have made the biggest strides this season is Stephany Kluver. In the dual against Flathead, Kluver took first in the javelin (112 feet, 5 inches) and discus (110-8).
“We knew she was going to have a good season in javelin but she’s also picked up a notch or two in the discus,” Kluver said. “She’s getting that thing out there 110 feet. I know that’s a vast improvement over last year.”
Seth Wright continues to excel in several events with four victories on Friday – high jump (6-3), long jump (20-5), triple jump (41-2.75) and discus (148-4).
Scott Harlow and Joel Fuller were two other LHS boys to win events in the dual. Harlow took the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.98 while Fuller won the javelin with a throw of 168-5.
Besides Kluver, other first-place performances for the Lady Loggers were turned in by Erin Baker in the shot put (31-6) and Rachael Sweedman in the triple jump (32-1.5).
The Loggers are now looking forward to the May 22-23 divisional meet at Polson.
“We’ll be OK, we don’t have a whole lot of numbers, especially with the girls,” Tabis said about divisionals. “Track is a sport of numbers. But I think we’ve got some kids who will qualify for state.”
The top five placewinners at divisionals will advance to the May 29-30 state meet in Butte.
In the junior varsity portion of Friday’s dual, winners from Libby included Garrett Craig (800, 2:24.53), Zeke Carlson (1600, 5:21.39), Will Lott (pole vault, 8-0); Trisha Murray (shot put, 23-0), Katie Emery (discus, 90-5) and Corey Willis (triple jump, 30-6.25).
Tabis was thankful to all of the local volunteers who helped Libby with track meets.
“The list is just endless,” Tabis said. “Thanks for coming out and supporting the program and most importantly, the kids.”
