On the day before Mother’s Day, Troy’s Aaron Palmer got some good advice. Of course, it came from his mom, Jeanie.

“Right before I threw, she just said, ‘relax,’” Palmer said after he cracked the 200-foot barrier in the javelin for the first time.

Palmer’s throw of 205 feet, 4 inches, is the best mark in the state this season. And it was just 1 foot short of tying the meet record at the 35th annual Archie Roe Invitational track meet on Saturday at Legends Stadium in Kalispell.

Palmer won the event rather easily. His nearest competitor finished 22 feet, 2 inches behind him.

The Trojans ended up with 18 points for 11th place at the meet – considered one of the toughest of the season. Besides Palmer’s 10 points for winning the javelin, he also placed third in the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 4 inches. Teammate Scotty Harper went 20 feet to take fifth in the long jump.

The Libby boys tied for 14th place with 10 points. Seth Wright finished at 6-6 in the high jump to place second. Polson’s Dillon Fryxell also cleared 6-6 but was awarded first place because he did it in fewer attempts.

Wright also placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 41-6.25.

Glacier took first place at the meet with 108 points. Among Class A teams, Whitefish was fourth with 42 points and among the B-C teams, Plains took sixth with 29 points.

On the girls’ side, Libby finished in a tie for 13th with six points. Stephany Kluver accounted for those points with a third-place showing in the discus. Kluver threw the disc 106-6.

Big Sky out of Missoula won with 126 points. Polson was the top A school with a fifth-place showing and 36 points. The top B-C school was Ronan-St. Ignatius with 25 points for sixth place.

Troy’s girls did not break into the points column.

In the junior-varsity portion of the meet, Libby placewinners were Kody Berget (first, 300 hurdles), Dylan Berget (second, 1600), Kelly May (fifth, javelin), Dean Willey (fifth, 200), Dietrich Coleman (sixth, long jump) and Sean Lundin (sixth, triple jump). For the JV girls, placewinners were Erin Baker (third, discus) and Katie Emery (fourth, shot put).

And in the freshman classification at the meet, Dylan Berget placed third in both the 800 and 3200 while Sawyer Zimmerman was fourth in the shot put. Jenny Johnson finished third in the freshman girls high jump.

The Loggers now get ready for a dual on Friday at home against Flathead. The event is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. Troy, meanwhile, heads up to Eureka on Saturday for the district meet. The start time is listed for 10 a.m.
