Head Start in Libby, Troy now enrolling

Kootenai Valley Head Start in Libby and Troy is now enrolling for the 2009-10 school year.

Head Start serves children ages 3 and 4 (by Sept. 10) whose family income meets the established federal guidelines. Program options include part day, full day and home-based experiences. Transportation is provided to school from designated bus stops.

Volunteers to wait tables to raise funds

Kootenai Pets For Life volunteers will wait tables on Thursday, March 26 from 5-8 p.m. at Pizza Hut in Libby to raise money for the group’s construction of a new animal shelter.

A percentage of sales as well as tips will go toward the effort.

The organization invites anyone willing to help with construction to call 295-5735 and leave a message. Those interested in donating by mail can send checks to P.O. Box 1454, Libby, MT 59923.

Libby Volunteer FD plans live fire training exercises

The Libby Volunteer Fire Department announced that it plans to conduct live fire training exercises on April 30.

Providing air quality is acceptable on that day, the fire exercise is scheduled for approximately 7-11 p.m. at 695 Farm to Market Road. The structure (legal address is section 25, T30N R31W) is clear of any asbestos-containing material but will contain some petroleum-based products.

Fund set up to help cancer victim cover bills

The family of Sheryl Eberly has set up an account in an effort to receive donations to help cover medical expenses. Eberly was diagnosed with Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma cancer on her tongue.

She has undergone one surgery and is currently receiving radiation treatment with the possibility of a second surgery. Hoping to receive help to get the overwhelming medical expenses covered, her daughters set up a cancer fund account at First National Bank of Montana.

Cabinet Resource Group plans event

The Cabinet Resource Group’s annual meeting on Saturday, March 28 will feature free-lance writer and land conservation professional Greg Tollefson, the organization announced.

The event at the Big Horn Lodge is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Tollefson has appeared as an outdoors columnist in the Missoulian for the past 22 years and has held positions with various conservation groups and organizations.

The Big Horn Lodge, overlooking the East Fork of Bull River, is located on Highway 56 near mile marker 7. A steep driveway that leads to the lodge is located on the east side of the highway.

The meeting agenda features bring your own beverage social hour at 4, followed by a potluck dinner at 5, a short business meeting, silent auction and the guest speaker. The events is open to the general public. Members are encouraged to bring friends and neighbors.

Meeting set on water settlement

A public hearing concerning the use of International Paper settlement funds to reduce water bills in the Libby city limits during the summer months is scheduled for Monday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Public health seminar set for Montana AC

The public is invited to a free public health seminar by St. John’s Lutheran Hospital dietitian Nicole Kapan, “Vitamin D – The Sunshine Vitamin,” on Thursday, March 26 at the Montana Athletic Club in Libby.

Alcohol sales, service training offered

Free training on responsible alcohol sales and service for employees and business owners will be offered in Troy on Tuesday, March 24 at 1:30 p.m., the Troy Police Department announced.

The training will be conducted in the Northwest Montana Community Change Project Office in Troy, located in the First National Bank building in office A. Facilitators include Vel Shaver, Lincoln County prevention specialist for the Flathead Valley Chemical Dependency Clinic, DUI Task Force Coordinator Carly Thompson, and City of Troy Patrol Officer Kit Pearson.

Writer with Libby connections plans book-signing

Carol Holoboff, who writes a monthly column for The Western News, will be on hand for a book-signing on Saturday, March 21, from 2-4 p.m. at Cabinet Books and Music in Libby.

Holoboff published her memoir, “The Bastard Tree” – promoted as a riveting read about a dysfunctional childhood and her search for a place in the normal world that lead her to professional success as well as happiness.
