Libby’s first e-waste event, which collected more than 3,000 pounds of electronics for recycling over two days last month, will most likely become an annual happening, organizers announced.

“The whole event went very well, I thought,” organizer Jennifer Nelson said. “It wasn’t exactly a door-buster, but we had good participation by several of the businesses.”

Organizers collected old electronics, such as computers, cell phones and printers, boxed them up and shipped them to a company that salvages reusable material from electronics and safely disposes its hazardous chemicals.

Due to scheduling difficulties, last month’s event was held on two weekdays, which may have limited residential participation, Nelson said. She hopes that in the future it will be held on a Friday and Saturday.

She also hopes to educate more people about e-waste – what it is and why it costs a small fee to properly dispose of most electronics.

“We’ll try to do an annual event as people get more used to the idea of it,” Nelson said.
