Lady Trojans down Red Devils
The Western News
In the end, the Troy High School girls basketball team pretty much won a free-throw shooting contest.
The Lady Trojans struggled a bit at the foul line in the first half but improved those numbers over the final two quarters in a 49-37 nonconference victory on Saturday over Noxon. In addition, Troy changed its defensive scheme.
“In the fourth quarter, we switched up our defense to man-to-man and made our free throws,” Troy coach Cory Andersen said. “We played pretty evenly through three quarters.”
Troy held advantages of 13-11 and 19-15 after the first and second quarters, respectively. But Noxon put together its best eight minutes in the third to take a 27-26 lead into the final quarter. From there, the Lady Trojans took over and went on a 23-10 run to end the game.
“We’re improving game by game … but we haven’t played some of the tougher competition yet,” Andersen said. “We’re winning the games we should win and we’re playing better each game.”
Molly Harpole and Alyssa Olds accounted for most of Troy’s scoring. Harpole finished with 20 points – including nine in that fourth quarter – and Olds added 12.
Noxon freshman Cara Spettler scored 13 for Noxon.
The Lady Trojans head to St. Ignatius on Friday and then come home to play host to Arlee on Saturday.
The home action on Saturday begins at 1:30 p.m. with JV girls. The varsity girls would begin at approximately 4:30 p.m.
