Letter: A few favors when donating to Wings

| February 25, 2009 11:00 PM

(The following letter was addressed to “the Troy community” – Ed.)

Dear Editor:

Soon, the students in Troy Junior and Senior High School will begin their fifth annual Wings fundraiser. We are all excited about the prospect of this year’s fundraising effort. As in the past, each class will be competing against the other to see who can raise the most money for this wonderful and local cause.

Over the past four years, our students have raised $10,677.16 to help people from Lincoln County offset the expense of traveling to and from regional medical centers for their chemo and radiation therapy as they fight their individual battles with cancer.

Many of these Wings recipients have been neighbors, family, and friends. It is very gratifying to me to see the energy these kids put into our Wings fundraiser, and the spirit of fun and competition that drives them.

While our official count for this year’s fundraising effort will begin on Monday, March 2, I know that some students will begin their efforts earlier than that in order to win the class competition.  I applaud their efforts.

I am asking those of you who will be helping these students a few simple favors.

• If you choose to give to WINGS via our students, I urge you to write a check payable to “Wings of Lincoln County.” While we are happy to accept cash, we wish to keep our fundraising efforts above reproach. I would hate to have the good work that our students do sullied should a cash donation be misdirected or lost.

• Please remember that the Wings walk in May is one of the primary sources of fundraising for this excellent organization. I respectfully request that your donation to the school’s Wings effort not replace your gift to the Wings walk in May.

• If you have any questions about Troy School’s WINGS effort, please call me at Troy High School at 295-4520 or e-mail me at troyguidance@gmail.com . I’d be more than happy to speak with you regarding our kids and the good work they do for Wings.
