Sports Roundup: Sweedman 3rd at Tri-State

Libby High School senior Kyle Sweedman placed third at the prestigious Tri-State Wrestling Tournament last weekend at North Idaho College.

Sweedman won six of seven matches with his lone loss coming to the eventual champion at 171 pounds – Dylan Rutledge of Auburn, Wash.

Sweedman opened with a pin in 4:46 over Brian Griswold of Lake City, Idaho. He took care of Tanen Doty of Missoula Sentinel in similar fashion with a pin in 4:54. Then came a 6-2 loss by decision to Rutledge.

Sweedman regained his composure quickly to pin Keegan McCormick of Tonasket, Wash., in just 42 seconds. He continued on through the consolation bracket with a pin in 2:35 over Kevin Moore of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. That sent him into the third-place match against Raleigh Beckstrom of Reardon, Wash.

Kody Berget also competed in the tournament for the Greenchain. Usually competing at 189 pounds, Berget competed in the 171 division along with Sweedman. Those two almost met one another in the consolation bracket but Berget’s loss to McCormick prevented the meeting. Berget’s wins came over Kris Whitfield of Gonzaga Prep, Wash., on a 12-4 decision and Seth Henderson of Arlington, Wash., on a 7-4 decision.

Cody Elliott went 1-2 in the 140-pound weight class. Elliott pinned Zach Miner of Kuna, Idaho, in 1:38.

Mike Roby (125) and Kyle Leir (135) competed as well with each falling in two matches. Leir lost both of his meetings on one-point decisions.

The tournament included wrestlers from 55 schools. As a team, Libby placed 35th with 31 points.

135–Kyle Leir (0-2) – Lost by dec. to Jordan Higa, Tahoma, 6-5; lost by dec. to Tyler Laurie, Tonasket, 4-3.

140–Cody Elliott (1-2) – Lost by pin to Grant Steen, Graham-Kapowsin, 1:17;  pinned Zach Miner, Kuna, 1:38; lost by maj. dec. to Dylan Ullery, Lake Washington, 14-3.

171–Kyle Sweedman (5-1) – Pinned Brian Griswold, Lake City, 4:46; pinned Tanen Doty, Sentinel, 4:54; lost by dec. to Dylan Rutledge, Auburn, 6-2; pinned Keegan McCormick, Tonasket, 0:42; pinned Kevin Moore, Coeur d’Alene, 2:35; def. Raleigh Beckstrom, Reardon.

Buzz Lucey Invite

While five Libby wrestlers competed in the Tri-State tourney, the rest of the team took part in the annual Buzz Lucey Invitational in Eureka.

Libby placed sixth as a team with 79 points among the 11 teams participating.

Four Greenchain grapplers placed at the tournament led by 125-pounder Mitch Haugen. Just a freshman, Haugen fell in the weight division’s championship match to Frenchtown’s Zach Westre, 8-2. Haugen settled for runner-up.

Libby’s Ian Edwards-Myslicki (105), Levi Erickson (112) and Devin Williams (130) all had fourth-place showings.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Troy 41, Thompson Falls 40

Trent Cratty’s free throws with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game boosted Troy to a 41-40 victory over Thompson Falls on Thursday evening.

Success at the foul line played a key role in the victory with Troy sinking 5-of-6 in the fourth quarter.

Brian Hammrich had a big game inside with 17 points while Cratty added 13.

Chris Pavlik scored 11 for the visitors.

Troy 69, Superior 37

The Trojans hurt Superior with the inside game with both Brian Hammrich and Ryan Rayson hitting for double figures in a 69-37 rout on Saturday.

Troy (1-0, 2-2) jumped out to a 26-6 lead in the first quarter and held a 41-15 advantage by intermission.

Hammrich scored 15 and Rayson added 10. Troy had another decent showing at the free-throw line with an 11-for-17 effort.

Flathead 73, Libby 52

Flathead came up big in the second half to pull away from Libby, 73-52, on Saturday.

The Loggers (1-3) were tied with Flathead after the first quarter, 14-14, and trailed by just five points at the break. But the Class AA Braves went on a 22-10 run in the third quarter.

Colton Cannon led the Libby scoring effort with 18 points while Kelly May added 10. Both of those players, along with Garrett Craig, hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Karl Ingram scored 27 for the Braves.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Flathead 55, Libby 45

The turnover bug hit the Lady Loggers hard in a 55-45 loss to Flathead on Saturday.

Libby (2-2) committed 17 first-half turnovers and the Class AA Bravettes took advantage by scoring 35 points over the first two quarters.

“The pressure that we received from the perimeter when we had the ball in the second half kept us out of our sets,” LHS coach Jim May said. “We need to get better on offense.”

Jackie Mee hit for 19 points, which included four 3-pointers. Jaime Gilden also hit double digits with 12 points. Mee had a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Alysha Martin came away with three steals and Logan Best dished out five assists.

Danika Johnson scored 22 for the Bravettes.

Thompson Falls 52, Troy 17

Thompson Falls posted a 52-17 victory over Troy in girls basketball action on Thursday.

Kyla Molzhon scored 18 to help the Bluehawks get off to a 1-0 start in District 7-B.

Jackie Pepiot had a team-high eight points for the Lady Trojans.

The Lady Trojans stayed competitive into the fourth quarter to push Superior in a 36-21 loss on Saturday.

Troy trailed 17-12 at halftime and 23-19 head into the final frame but the Bobcats finished with a 13-2 run to win by 15.

Troy (0-1, 0-4) exhibited balanced scoring with six points from Alyssa Olds and five points each from Allie Maestas and Jackie Pepiot.
