Michael Lawrence Vogel Sr.

Michael Lawrence Vogel Sr., 60, died Thursday, Nov. 26 at his home in Troy.

He was born in Bismarck, N.D. to Steve and Anna Marie Vogel on April 9, 1949. 

He spent part of his childhood in Bismarck before moving to Yakima, Wash. where he graduated from high school and was later drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He fought with heavy artillery from 1969 to 1970.

After receiving his honorable discharge from the military, he moved to the Troy and Libby area where he remained until the time of his death.

Mr. Vogel was diligent and hard-working. He was employed at the mill in Libby for over 25 years. When the mill closed operation, he worked as a carpenter and maintenance man for Rocky Mountain Academy in Bonners Ferry, Idaho and then later became employed at Riley Creek in Moyie Springs, Idaho. 

When he wasn’t working or spending time with family, he could be found in his wood shop. He was a master carpenter and loved building beautiful items for others to enjoy. He also liked hunting, fishing and tending to his ever-increasing vegetable garden.

Mr. Vogel was a gentle, giving and dedicated father, husband, friend, brother and son. 

He was preceded in death by his father Steve and his brother Jimmy.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Denise Vogel; his four children Cassandra Vogel Mitchell, Michael Vogel Jr., Sarah Myers Giles and Misty Myers; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother Anna Marie Vogel; brothers Leonard, Ronnie, and Robert Vogel; sisters Carol Hoffman, Roberta Knight and Trish Wickersham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at Troy Church of God.

Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Libby are handling arrangements.
