Nordicfest seeks groups for food booths

Nordicfest announced this week that it is looking for new groups to join its existing lineup of food booths.

The festival in Libby is scheduled to run Sept. 11-13.

Operators of food booths must be nonprofit organizations. Festival organizers added that groups must participate for the full three days or share those three days with another nonprofit organization.

School board planning various meetings

The Libby School Board announced dates and times for three public meetings.

On Tuesday, April 14 at noon, the board will meet to take action on two coaching contracts and a temporary teacher contract, as well as review its agenda for the April 21 regular meeting.

On Thursday, April 16 at 7 p.m., the Parent Involvement Policy Committee will meet. The agenda includes an information item on the district’s parent involvement policy.

On Tuesday, April 21 at 6:15 p.m., the Curriculum/Testing Committee will meet. The regular school board meeting follows at 7 p.m.

All meetings will be held in the board room at the Central Administration Building (724 Louisiana Ave.) in Libby.

Yaak Rod and Gun Club plans safety course

The Yaak Rod and Gun Club is planning to hold a hunter safety course on April 18-19 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Rehberg staffer available in Libby on April 16

U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg announced his congressional field representative, Larry Anderson, will be conducting traveling office hours in Libby on Thursday, April 16, at 2 p.m., at Libby City Hall.

The public is invited to express their viewpoints on specific issues and legislation, or to inquire about federal assistance and programs. Constituents are free to drop by the location or call Anderson in Rehberg’s Missoula District office for an appointment at 406-543-9550.

Troy church group hosting ladies luncheon

The Troy United Methodist Women’s Group is hosting a donations-accepted ladies luncheon on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m.

The theme this year is “laughter is a gift from God.” Organizers said seating is limited so reservations are requested.

Kootenai Valley Ducks Unlimited plans event

Kootenai Valley Ducks Unlimited will gather for its 24th annual Conservation Dinner on Saturday, April 25.

The event will run from 5-10 p.m. in the Ponderosa Room at the City Hall complex in Libby. Along with dinner, events include a raffle, auction and other fun.

Brain injury group to meet

North Valley Support Group’s traumatic brain injury meetings are set for Tuesday, April 21 in Libby and Wednesday, April 22 in Troy.

The group will meet at 5:30 p.m., on April 21 at the Families in Partnership offices, 83 Collins Ave., in Libby, and at 6 p.m. on April 22 at Kootenai Senior Center in Troy.

The April meeting will cover concussions in sports, use of helmets, mild traumatic brain injury, the “Jell-O Science Project” and discussion of the spring raffle.

Group’s program features foot care

The Libby Diabetes Awareness and Support Group’s regular meeting on Tuesday, April 14 will feature the program, “Take Care of Your Feet: You Only Get Two of Them!” Amy Smart, Lincoln County health nurse, will present the program, which begins at 7 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Libby.

Cancer support group to hold meeting in Troy

Animal shelter plans tours of new building in Libby

Kootenai Pets for Life’s meeting on Monday, April 13, will be held at the new shelter building on City Shops Road in Libby. The public is invited to come out at 6:30 p.m. for a tour.

Kootenai Pets for Life is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization providing services to stray and abandoned pets in the Libby-Troy area. The no-kill shelter offers pet owner education and a spay/neuter program.

American Legion auxiliary to hold bake sale on Friday

The American Legion auxiliary in Libby plans to hold a bake sale on Friday, April 10 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., or until all items have been sold.

The auxiliary is also collecting items for local troops in Iraq. A box can be found by the Legion’s front door for items.

Foreign, independent film series continues on April 21

The Libby Public Library will present the latest installment of its foreign and independent film series on Tuesday, April 21. The movie begins at 6 p.m., and popcorn is provided.  This month’s feature is the 2002 film “Blue Car.” The film is rated R and stars David Strathaim and Agnes Bruckner.

Pageant seeks applicants for Mrs. Libby

The Mrs. Montana Pageant, which serves as the state preliminary to Mrs. America – is seeking applicants for the title of Mrs. Libby to represent her community in the 2009 pageant, Sheree Channel, executive State director, announced.

Once selected, the representative will advance to compete in the Mrs. Montana Pageant to be held July 11 at the Petro Theatre in Billings. Applicants must be age 18 or older (no age limit), married, a U.S. citizen and a Montana resident. No performing talent required.

The new Mrs. Montana wins a prize package valued at more than $8,000 and an all-expense paid trip to the nationally televised Mrs. America Pageant.

Library’s Cheap Date Movie to show ‘Dead Poet’s Society’

The Libby Public Library will present “Dead Poet’s Society” on Saturday, April 11 at noon as part of its Cheap Date Movie program.

The film is rated PG and tells the story of a boarding school professor who inspires his students through poetry.

Relay For Life extends invite to cancer survivors

Relay For Life is inviting all cancer survivors to participate in this summer’s event in Libby. The relay will be held Aug. 7-8 at Asa Wood Elementary. Prior to the opening ceremony on that Friday, all cancer survivors are invited to a Celebration of Life Reception beginning at 5 p.m.

From the reception, survivors will be gathered for a photo. The opening ceremony follows at 6 p.m. and is dedicated to those living with cancer. Survivors lead the first lap around the track and the relay begins. T-shirts and a photo will be provided to all cancer survivors at no cost. Survivors do not need to belong to a team in order to participate in the relay.

A special lap immediately following the survivors’ lap will be dedicated to all caregivers.

Home Educators event coming to Kalispell

Kalispell will be hosting the 2009 Montana Home Educator’s State Convention on May 15-16 at The Christian Center.

Lorrie Flem from TEACH Magazine in Seattle and Mark Hamby from Lamplighter Publishing in Pennsylvania will be keynote speakers. Steve White, a founding member of the Montana Coalition of Home Educators and their legislative liaison will also speak on Saturday. There are 28 workshops to choose from as well as four general sessions.

Early registration fees must be postmarked by April 20; early birds will receive a free Mother Enrichment packet and an invitation to a special forum with Lorrie Flem on May 14.

SWAP plans ‘poverty party’ on April 16

Seniors With A Purpose – also known as SWAP – plans to meet on Thursday, April 16 at 11 a.m. at Libby Christian Church. All seniors are welcome.

The gathering is being called a “poverty party” so participants should “dress down.” Beans and cornbread will be provided. Participants are asked to bring a salad or dessert to share.

There is no charge for the event, however, donations for the food pantry are accepted.

Scholar to present ‘War Poetry’ program

The Lincoln County Public Libraries will host Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau program “War Poetry: The Poetry is in the Pity” with scholar Lisa Simon on Tuesday, April 14. The program will be at the Libby Public Library at 6 p.m.

The presentation is free and open to the public.
