Aaron Palmer, Scotty Harper and Cullen Metz all won places to help the Troy High School boys to a fourth-place finish at the 19-school Tolman-Touchette TNT Memorial track meet at Frenchtown on Saturday.

Palmer won both the javelin and high jump. The Trojan senior threw the javelin 179 feet, 6 inches to outdistance Austin Landis of Corvallis by just over eight feet. In the high jump, Palmer cleared 5-10 to clinch the victory. Palmer had the bar raised to 6-4 but was not able to clear that height.

“We started the track meet with snow on the ground but by the end of the meet it was warm and sunny,” Troy track coach Neil Newton said. “This was a great track meet because we got to see every team in our division except Eureka and we’ll see Eureka plenty this track season. The kids got to see their competition to make it to the state track meet.”

Harper, senior, placed fifth in the long jump at 19-11. Palmer was right behind him at 19-10 for sixth place. Palmer also placed in the triple jump with a 41-9 1/2  – good for second.

Metz heaved the shot 43-11 to place fifth in that event.

Corvallis easily won the meet with 130 points. Frenchtown finished second at 55.5, followed by Darby (48), Troy (33.5), Loyola Sacred Heart (32) and Butte Central (32).

For the girls, Allie Maestas placed fourth in the 400-meter dash. Maestas covered the oval in 1:06.99. Brekka Johnson of Stevensville took first at 1:02.07.

The meet also included competition for freshmen and Troy had some standouts in Ryan Rayson and Cory Orr. Rayson cleared 5-8 in the high jump to place first – a height that would’ve gotten him second in the varsity meet. Orr went 17-3 for second place in the long jump.

Newton said freshmen Sara McLeod and Ashley Morkeberg competed well in the throwing events.

Troy was scheduled to participate in the Kalispell Time Trials on Tuesday with the next meet scheduled for Thursday, April 16 at Thompson Falls.
