Former Libby High School standout George Mercer had a moment in the spotlight during the University of Montana’s 35-3 victory on Saturday over rival Montana State.

Although the game had been decided with the Grizzlies holding onto an insurmountable lead, Mercer – a backup defensive end for Montana – picked off a pass and returned it 73 yards for a touchdown with just 12 seconds remaining.

Mercer, son of Gerry and Kim Mercer of Libby, is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound junior. He was slowed a bit by an injury back in spring ball but has come on this regular season to contribute.

Last season, he played in 10 games at defensive end and on special teams. During his redshirt freshman season in 2006, he lettered with most action coming on special teams.

For the Loggers, Mercer lettered three times and played receiver and cornerback. He was also an accomplished basketball player in high school.

Montana, 11-1 overall, 7-1 in the Big Sky, will now head to the playoffs for the 16th straight season.
