Mee takes singles crown at divisionals

At the Western A divisional tennis tournament in Kalispell, Libby’s Jackie Mee repeated last year’s performance to win the championship match against Whitefish’s Brielle Menegazzi (no. 2), 6-3, 6-1.

“Jackie played the best tennis I’ve seen her play all year,” said Libby tennis coach Kyle Hannah. “I believe Jackie has a good shot of being in the top four. She’ll just have to play her best tennis to reach her goal - to win state.”

As a freshman last year, Mee took the singles title, also against Menegazzi, before placing fourth at state - Mee has defeated Menegazzi five out of seven times in her career.

“It felt good to win - playing her so many times, it always feels good to win,” said Mee, who will be the only Logger to attend the state championship this Thursday in Polson and Ronan.

Besides the presence of tennis powerhouses Katie Mariani of Havre and Livingston’s Anna Arrowsmith, Mee said the compeition overall will be fierce.

“When you make state, everyone is good,” said Mee. “I hope to improve on last year’s results and just be confident in myself and try to handle some nerves. This year I hope to be more ready for it.”

Mee started off Thursday seeded no.1, winning a second-round victory, 6-0, 6-0 against Bigfork’s Jade Bosic, before going on Friday to beat Jenny Reilly of Polson, 6-2, 6-1 and Whitefish’s Kate Klundt in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0.

On Friday, Libby’s Nicole Newman and Riley Dinning were defeated by Polson’s Cali Hislop and Malika Erickson, 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals, after victories against Anderson and Raymond of Clark Fork, 7-5, 6-1, and Cullen and Birgensmith of Whitefish, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

On Saturday in double elimination, Newman and Riley Dinning, along with Libby boys’ no. 1 single, Steven Hauck, could advance no more due to losses.

“(Hauck, Newman and Dinning) were all defeated in the match needed to get into the semi-finals,” said Hannah. “They were one match away from making it to state,” added Hannah.

On Thursday, Hauck had a bye the first round and defeated Columbia Falls’ Gao, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round, going on to beat his teammate, Hunter Sheffield, 6-0, 6-3 in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

Hauck eventually lost to Bigfork’s Myers, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

“I was very proud of the Libby kids. They represented the town and the school very well. From what both the girls and boys showed this year, there was much improvement from last year. I’m real excited for them to compete again next year.”

Libby girls took fourth overall with 31 points, while Polson won with 55; the boys placed last overall with 9 points, with Whitefish winning at 79 points.

Renzo Caimi of Whitefish defeated Ryan Rottenbiller of Whitefish, 6-0, 6-0 for the singles boys’ crown.
