Libby tennis team trekking onward

The Libby boys and girls tennis teams lost to Polson (2-5 and 3-4) on their homecourt Friday and Saturday to Whitefish (0-7 and 2-5), before bouncing back against Troy, 5-2 and 6-0.

The girls beat Mission Friday at home, 2-0, while the boys lost 2-4.

“The kids had a good first match of the year,” said Libby tennis coach Kyle Hannah, “both Polson and us.”

Hannah singled out Dinning and Newman in their match against Polson, who's doubles team is expected to do excellent at divisionals and state.

“We lost to them, but they competed well and know the caliber they need to get up to.”

Hannah also noted sophomore Audra Poppen's performance, who is number three singles.

“She has stepped up her game from last year and is hitting with confidence.”

Hannah added Libby's doubles teams competed well against Whitefish - a hard team to beat.

“Our one and two doubles girls teams did extremely well against Whitefish,” he said. “They played together last year and are hitting the season well to begin with.”

As for the boys' team, Hannah said Hunter Sheffield had also improved his game over the summer, proving his perseverance against Polson.

“He was down 3-8 and ended up winning 10-8, so his drive to not quit was impressive and exciting for me as a coach. He didn't buckle and give up.”

Hannah also noted his number three doubles team, Romas and Framont.

“They were the closest to getting the win against Whitefish and they competed well and beat the Polson three doubles team.”

Hannah said he is optimistic about the team's development.

“There's a lot of work to be done for both the boys and girls, but we're looking forward to getting a lot of strokes in with the nicer weather.”

Their next match will be against Sandpoint and Troy this Friday in Libby.

“I expect the best coming in from Idaho, so we better be on top of our game,” he added.
