Trojans brave elements in Plains' co-ed relays

The Troy track team travelled to Plains last Thursday, beginning their season amidst flurries to take first in the combined long jump and 800 Medley relay.

With only two of the five Trojan girls participating in the meet, Troy managed third in both the 4X100 and 4X200 co-ed relays.

Troy track coach Rich Ramondelli was pleased with his team's performance.

“It's a fun thing to kick off the year,” he said. “They do a great job,” he added of the Plains' staff.

Although the weather was cold, Ramondelli said it was great experience for the team.

“They were able to at least get down there and get some practice in,” he said. “They're getting used to running in the cold. The wind was blowing big time and every couple of hours we'd get a little bit of snow.”

Ramondelli said the team is young, with just five girls who compete in sprints, distance and long jump.

“We're very inexperienced,” he said. “We've got a handful of kids that have some extensive varsity experience, but after that we're raw.”

Ramondelli added that the team will aim to improve their individual records one meet at a time.

“It'll be a learning curve pretty much most of the season,” he said. “As the season progresses, we'll look at personal bests and hopefully we'll be at a certain point come districts-time the middle of May.”

Their next meet is scheduled for this weekend.

“Saturday we go to Frenchtown, and that's a big one,” he said.
