Friday, Sept. 14 marked the 24th year that grandparents day has been celebrated. Although President Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparent Day in 1978, the state of West Virginia actually began celebrating the day in 1973. September was chosen for the holiday to signify the "autumn years" of life.

The staff and students of the Kootenai Valley Christian School honored their grandparents on Friday, Sept. 14 with a luncheon and a special chapel.

Students came to school that day dressed in their Sunday best and greeted their grandparents or "special grandparent substitute" with a corsage, a flower, or a homemade picture.

Tastes of autumn were suggested in the lunch consisting of turkey noodles, green beans and apple crisp. The students then entertained the large crowd of grandparents, some of whom had traveled from Washington, Idaho and other far away places to spend their special day with their special family members, with songs and presentations.

Kootenai Valley Christian School has been celebrating Grandparent's Day for over 10 years and they look forward to another chapel full of nanna's and poppas in 2008.
