Barbara M. Haaland

Barbara May (Markell) Haaland, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 30, at her home in Troy.

Haaland was born on May 22, 1923 in Sedro Woolley, Wash. to Dorothy Marks-Markell and Steven Markell.

Barbara was joined by two sisters, Joyce and June.

Her father died in 1930 and her mother later married Harold Stogsdill in 1932.

The family was joined by three more sisters, Rose, Joanne and Nancy.

Barb graduated from Sedro Woolley High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Women's Air Corps, serving at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas until 1945.

Barbara married John G. "Jack" Haaland on July 15, 1950 in Sedro Woolley and moved to Troy in July 1952 where they raised three children; Rick, Dick and Patti.

Jack was employed by the J. Neils Lumber Company and, after the children were raised, Barbara went to work for the U.S. Forest Service.

Preceded in death by her son Richard Haaland in 1971 as well as sisters JoAnne, Rose and June.

Barbara is survived by her husband John (Jack) Haaland; her son, Rick Haaland and daughter Patti Haaland, all of Troy; sisters Joyce Smith of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; and Nancy Knowlgon of Richland, Wash. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Shannen, Kristen, Richard and Robert; great-grandchildren: Brady, Samantha, Jordan, Emily and Courtney, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Milnor Lake Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
