Don S. Shinkle
Don S. Shinkle, 89, of Grants Pass, Ore. died May 16, 2007, in his home from kidney failure.
He was born January 6, 1918, in Hartley, Iowa.
Don married Edna Shikany in Oakland, Calif. in 1939.
He left Iowa in 1937 and rode the rails to California. He was a fireman in Richmond, Calif. He was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He married Sandie Brown in Libby in 1992 where they enjoyed an exciting life of fishing, big game hunting and raising farm animals. They moved to Grants Pass, Ore. in 2000.
He was a 60- year member of the American Legion, and a Life member of the National Rifle Association. He was a long-time member of the Order of Masons and the Algeria Shriners of Montana.
He was well known for his team of mules in local parades and wagon rides for children and the seniors at the Libby Care Center.
He is survived by his wife, sons Jerry and Byron Shinkle, daughter Nancy Higgins, stepson Geno Hardin, a brother Lyle, a sister Reva, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29 at the Stephens Family Chapel, with Rev. Charles Chase of the Wilderville United Methodist Church) officiating. Interment and full military honors will be held at 3 p.m. at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
