Appeal for help from the public and law system

| December 18, 2007 11:00 PM

To the Editor:

I am continually amazed and saddened at the lack of concern and care for the abused, neglected and starving animals in our area. Time and time again I, as an avid animal lover and owner of horses, dogs and cats, have come across extreme cases of starving animals, horses in particular.

I have gone through the legal procedures of filing complaints, turned them in and have followed up on the situation. There is never anything to follow up on, the report is filed, an officer is sent out to investigate, a report is sent to the county attorney's office, someone notifies the person owning the animal and tells them to get feed. Sometimes a bale or two of hay is bought for a few days, then it's done and forgotten.

The animals are never taken away so they continue to starve and go without shelter. Standing in mud, rain or snow with no way to get out of the elements. Countless times I have taken my own feed and fed these animals to keep them alive and yet these animals are not removed from their pain and suffering.

We have domesticated these animals so they are dependent on us for survival. Someone in the legal department needs to take a stand to help.

I am more than willing to foster and find them a good home. I need help from the system to remove and help these animals. Slap a child, the child is taken away. Starve an animal, no one does anything about it.
