Tobacco users invited to take part in Nov. 16 Smokeout

| November 14, 2006 11:00 PM

To the Editor:

I am writing to invite Lincoln County tobacco users to join thousands of others nationwide to take a "breather" and go just 24 hours without tobacco as part of the 2006 Great American Smokeout.

This year's smoke-free holiday will be on Thursday, Nov. 16. Over 1,000 free Tobacco Quit Kits (for smokers and chewers) are available throughout the county at medical care providers, pharmacists, Senior Citizens Centers, Troy City Hall, Flathead Valley Community College, St. John's Lutheran Hospital and all day long, Thursday the 16th at a special booth set up at Rosauers.

Quitting even for a day is difficult. However, anyone who is considering quitting, or those who want to support a loved one who wants to quit, can get help from the toll-free Montana Tobacco Quit Line, 1-866-485-QUIT (7848). Any tobacco user who calls can receive free advice and direction from Quit specialists, four weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy (when needed) and other free resources to help smokers quit for good.

The best part is using Montana's Tobacco Quit Line is nearly seven times more effective than trying to quit alone, without help. What's more, quitting is the best thing tobacco users can do for their health. The Montana Tobacco Quit Line has helped more than 1,000 Montanans quit.

Tobacco users, mark your calendars for Thursday, Nov. 16, and make a commitment to quit smoking or chewing tobacco for the day. Then call the Montana Tobacco Quit Line. You will be glad you did!
