Woman killed in accident

| March 7, 2006 11:00 PM

An 81-year-old Troy woman was killed in a single-vehicle accident Saturday on Montana Highway 56.

According to information released by the Montana Highway Patrol, Margaret V. Scheffler was southbound in a 1998 Buick around 11:30 a.m. when for unknown reasons her car drifted off the west shoulder of the highway near mile marker 21.

The vehicle traveled about 100 yards before the driver over-corrected, sending the car back onto the

highway, where it slid sideways and back off the west shoulder. The car struck a tree with the driver-side door and continued down the embankment and into several smaller trees.

Scheffler, who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported by ambulance to St. John's Lutheran Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Montana Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the cause of the accident.
