Former resident Carole Jane Smith, 84, died at home on Jan. 31, 2006 in Reno, Nev.

She was born in Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1923 at the age of 2, she moved with her parents, George and Elsie Smith, to Libby, Mont.

Carole attended Eastern Washington University where she met her husband Robert Nicolai. They married in 1942 and her husband, Nick, whom she affectionately called him, left shortly after for active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Many summers were spent in Libby with her daughters, Sharon and Beth, her husband Nick, her parents, relatives and friends. She shared her love of nature and stream fishing with her family. Carole loved to play tennis and golf and spent many an afternoon playing bridge with her buddies and always had plenty of funny jokes to share.

One of Carole's favorite pastimes was baking her famous chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren.

Carole is survived by her husband Nick of 63 years of marriage, daughter Sharon Schroeder and her husband David, Beth Brennan and her husband Steve, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends is planned for spring to celebrate her life. Carole was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
