Carroll Smith
Carroll K. Smith, 82, died Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Libby Care Center.
He had been a resident of Libby for the past 25 years. He was born at Hazelton, N.D., on May 3, 1923 to Fred Smith and Mary Richmond Smith and was raised and educated at Hazelton.
Carroll served in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He married Ruth Elaine Podritz July 27, 1947. He had been farmer and rancher as well as working as a corrections officer at the State Penitentiary in North Dakota; he also had been a carpenter and house mover. He moved to Bismark in 1957 where he remained until coming to Libby in 1980.
His wife Ruth preceded him in death in 1965. Also preceding him in death were 3 brothers, a sister and a grandson.
He greatly enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing, playing cribbage as well as being a great movie buff.
Survivors include his children: Roy Smith of Helena; Bruce Smith and his wife Norma of Wishek, N.D.; Michael Smith and his wife Pam of Bismark, N.D.; Kelly Smith of Libby; Robert Smith and his wife Becky of Libby; Quinn Podritz and his wife Lisa of Randolph, Minn.; Ginger Yde and her husband Chris of Helena; and Cindy Smith of Libby. Also, a sister, Gladys Goerhing of Slayton Minn.; 25 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment services with military honors will be at Linton, N.D. Local arrangements are by Nelson and Vial Funeral Home in Libby.
