Signe Sherman
Signe L. Sherman, 93, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at her home at Angel Island.
Signe was born Nov. 11, 1913, to C. Leonard and Herta Lidfeldt.
She was one of the first women to receive bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the University of Rochester in New York.
Signe on Nov. 18, 1944, married Joseph V. Sherman in North Carolina after the couple eloped on a train.
After her husband's death, Signe in 1987 moved alone to Angel Island to fulfill a dream of living along a rural lake. She often said there was no other place she wanted to be and loved her home.
She belonged to Women in Science, Who's Who in America and American Chemical Society.
Signe enjoyed long walks around Angel Island and visiting friends and neighbors. She was cared for in her home for 2 1/2 years and enriched several people's lives.
She is survived by friends Marshall and Pat Warrington, Paul and Ann Warrington, and Dave and Jessyca Shepherd and their children; and caregivers Barbara Hoadley, Betty Crammer, Becky Emery, Dolly Miller, Richard and Sandy Johnson, Leona Beuskens, Joanie Mears, Laura Crowe and Mary Stephenson. Martha Odegarde provided medical care.
No services were held. Her body was donated for medical studies.
