Lester Sorensen

Lester M. Sorensen, 90, of Solway, Minn., and Troy, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji, Minn., where he lived for two years.

Lester spent his summers at his son's home in Solway and his winters at the home of his daughter, LuRee Sampson, and her husband, Ray, of Troy.

Lester was born Jan. 28, 1916, in Jones Township, Minn., to the late Neils and Sena Sorensen.

He completed eighth grade in a one-room school close to the family farm and graduated from Bemidji High School in 1935.

When his father died in 1936, Lester took over the family farm. He also worked for Duluth Mesabi & Iron Range Railway for seven years, in road construction, and for Olson Oil Co. in Bemidji.

Lester was town clerk for Jones Township for 15 years, and secretary, treasurer and president of Jones Rural Telephone Co. for 23 years.

While in Troy, he attended Three Lakes Community Church, where he made many friends. He enjoyed going to Kootenai Senior Center in Troy.

Lester also loved children.

He also was preceded in death by wives Evelyn and Verna, six brothers and three sisters.

Lester is survived by his daughter in Troy; a son, Larry Sorensen, and his wife, Sue, in Solway; eight grandchildren; five-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
