4A REGION 1 BOYS SOCCER: Sandpoints needs shootout to clip Trojans

SANDPOINT — After eighty minutes of regulation, two ten minute overtimes and twenty-three shootout penalty kicks, the score was still 0-0 Thursday at Travers Park.

Amid near darkness, Sandpoint's Kyle Van Dyk was able slot the decisive goal, giving the Bulldogs (16-1-2) a dramatic 1-0 boys soccer win over the Post Falls Trojans in the 4A Region 1 championship game.

"That's probably the most fun game I've ever coached in, and I've coached in a lot of games," Trojans coach Gabe Lawson said. "I couldn't have asked to be part of a better game. Those are the games you dream of, that you want to be a part of."

There was a multitude of pinged posts and crossbars, several diving saves by both goalies, numerous yellow cards, a fight, and enough wipeouts and collisions to satisfy a rugby fan. And that was just in regulation.

"That was just a great tribute to North Idaho soccer," a weary Bulldog coach Randy Thoreson said. "I hope we don't get any more of those because I'll never survive them.

"Today there was a cellephane bag over the net, nothing was going in," Thoreson added. "Give Post Falls credit, they came out and battled the whole game."

It goes without saying that the keepers played a huge roll. Post Falls goalie Justin Johnson had to leave the game via ambulance midway through the second half after taking a knee to the head, his third violent collision of the contest.

Not to be outdone was the goalkeeping of Sandpoint's Seth Baker, who also made numerous lay-out saves.

"There's no doubt in my mind who the best keeper in the state is," Thoreson said.

Sandpoint earned the automatic berth in the state tournament in Boise starting next Friday. Post Falls (9-9-0) must travel down to Lewiston to face Emmett (12-7-3) on Saturday.

First half — none. Second half — none. Shootout — 1, Spt, Alex Van Dyk.

Shots on goal — PF 7, Spt 20.

Saves — PF, Johnson 10, Ambrosetti 3. Spt, Baker 6.

1A DISTRICT VOLLEYBALL: Clark Fork, Lakeside advance to next round

PLUMMER — The No. 3 seed Clark Fork Wampus Cats and the fourth-seeded Lakeside Knights came away with first-round victories at the 1A District 1 volleyball tournament at Lakeside Middle School.

Clark Fork defeated No. 6 Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy 25-16, 25-18, 25-22, and Lakeside swept No. 5 Post Falls Christian Academy 25-15, 25-21, 25-17. PFCA and Cd'A Charter were eliminated.

With the wins, Lakeside (9-11) and the No. 1 seed Kootenai Warriors (22-2) play Saturday morning at 9, followed by Clark Fork (11-10) and the No. 2 Wallace Miners (14-7).

The winners of those two matches will play for the championship and No. 1 seed at state. The losers play each other, with the winner of that match playing the loser of the championship, with the winner gaining the second berth to state.

Clark Fork was led by Tiffany Van Buren's 20 digs and four kills, and Tia Becker added eight aces. Katie Baker recorded nine kills, two aces and a block for Cd'A Charter.

Davi Swan and Rian Miller each had 11 kills and for Lakeside, and Katie Hoye led PFCA with 20 kills, five kills and two blocks.
