Don't vote to raise taxes

| November 8, 2005 11:00 PM

To the Editor:

Just finished reading the letter to the editor of Nov. 2, by Dave Holzer and I could not agree more.

Whether some may or may not approve of the retirees moving into Libby, they are helping our economy and our local merchants. With the environmental whackos instrumental in getting the mill shut down, closing the mines, and stopping all the timber sales, tourism and a retiring community is all we have left.

One of the proponents of the pool said it would attract visitors. They will stay to take in our glorious surroundings and visit our people but stay longer and spend more money because of a pool? Get real!

The Memorial Center and now the new nine-hole golf course are being built without adding to our property taxes.

Most of the retirees moving in are not filthy rich. The reasonable cost of property and property taxes are a big incentive for these people moving to Libby. With property and taxes still affordable, they can still live in our beautiful community, enjoy our wonderland, and support our merchants.

So please, let's not add $200 a year (over $6,000 for 20 years) to our taxes and later probably more. Let's not price ourselves out of reason.

One other comment he made was to send the ballots only to property owners the ones who pay the taxes. I would also add school levy ballots and any and all proposed new taxes that would affect property owners.
