Action requested on old school
To the Editor:
I'm happy to read that the school board has appointed another committee, this time to research the legalities of selling the old school. I sincerely hope this won't be just another delaying tactic to assure that another summer will pass before anything is done for the school.
Probably the public is not aware that the school board has always had the authority to sell the school, without the mandate they now have from the community. The Friends of Libby High School were ready to undertake basic preventive maintenance last year, if they could have acted before fall and winter set in.
There is no question that the leaking roof is causing damage, in spite of the engineer's report that the building is basically sound. They say it is "Prime for Restoration." If another season passes, with more delays, some school board members may just get their wish that the building will "just fall down."
Another board member says they must try to make as much money as possible if the school is sold. Last year, at a meeting I attended, one member stated that the $100,000 offer was "small potatoes" compared to the multi-million operation that is our school district. I had to wonder why we are always hearing that they are "under-funded?" However, I just read that this year they have received more than was expected. Okay. But please, let's have some action. Huh?
