Wet, cooler weather tempers wildfire activity

Loretta D. Jones, 75, of Troy, passed away early Sunday morning, Aug. 19, 2018 at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center, after battling decades of diabetes and a final fight with leukemia. Words cannot express the admiration we had for Loretta’s refusal to let her illness control her life. In spite of extremely difficult times, she kept up her humor and glowed with pride in her love for her family and friends.

Mildred Baeth Whitehouse
Our precious Mildred slipped away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Aug. 19, 2018. She was born during a blizzard Jan. 5, 1917, in Malta to George and Myrtle Baeth. She was the fifth of 13 children. In 1926, the family moved to Libby so Mildred’s oldest brother Bill could start high school and her dad George began working in the boiler room at J. Neils Lumber Company.

Juanita F. Rice, 79, of Libby passed away Aug. 10, 2018, at her home in Libby of natural causes. She was born Sept. 12, 1938, in Austin, Minnesota. At an early age, she moved to Roundup, where she attended school, graduating from Roundup High School as salutatorian of her class. She then received her associates degree from Parks Business School in Denver, Colorado. In 1966, Juanita moved to Alaska where she lived for 19 years. She returned to Montana in 1985 and lived in Helena until she moved to Libby in 1991. While in Libby, she worked at Ben Franklin.

He was raised and attended elementary and middle school in Ronan. He attended Libby High School, where he graduated in 1960. After high school, Dean attended Carroll College in Helena on a basketball scholarship where he played as their starting forward/guard for four years. He was inducted into the Carroll College Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982, along with his high school basketball coach, Bill Racicot. After graduating from Carroll in 1965, Dean enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Highway 37 fire 80 percent contained
The Highway 37 fire remained at 70 acres while containment increased from 60 percent on Monday to 80 percent Thursday, the U.S. Forest Service reported.

Voices in the Wilderness Surviving a wild wind

Lightning-caused fires keeping firefighters busy
Firefighters made good progress overall this week as they dealt with more than 20 remote wildland fires started last weekend by lightning. But though many of the smaller fires had been contained and controlled by Thursday, three larger fires remained active and promised to keep resources busy for the coming days.
