Two local graduates earned scholarships from Cabinet Peaks Medical Center last week.

Ashlyn Monigold of Libby and Mazzie Hermes of Troy each received $500 from the medical center, officials announced June 4. The money, raised by employees at the facility, is aimed at encouraging local young people to study medicine.

“We understand the importance of giving back to our youth and recognize the costs associated with getting a college education,” said Andre Mehan, human resources manager, in a statement. “The seniors who receive scholarships from Cabinet Peaks Medical Center have plans to enter the medical field in one way or another, and we know that some of them may consider coming back home to serve the patients at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center.”

A scholarship committee that reviews applications chose Monigold and Hermes. The criteria used included academics, activities, community service and displays of leadership. Applicants also submitted an essay detailing their reasons for pursuing a career in health care.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer these scholarships to young adults in our service area,” Mehan said.
