Loggers fall to Twins A in double header

The Libby Loggers hit the road for a double header showdown with the Glacier Twins ‘A’ team Tuesday, falling 15-0 and 12-0.

Glacier took the lead early in game one.

The Logger bats made steady contact in the first inning, with Quade Anderson logging the only Libby hit of the game on a grounder to second base, but three infield groundouts brought the Twins to the plate.

Glacier took a slow but steady toll on the Loggers, stitching together a series of singles, walks and errors to gradually work their way around the bases.

In the bottom of the inning, Libby catcher Anderson threw a tag out on a steal at second to shortstop Tim Carvey, but by the next out from Carvey on a runner at second, the Twins were up 3-0. When Jeff Offenbecher caught a fly out in center field to end the inning, Glacier had a six run lead.

A fly out to left field from Trey Thompson in the second joined two strikeouts to end hopes of a Libby comeback, and though the Logger defense slowed their advance, the Twins added three more runs.

Chris Auge took the only base for Libby in the third with a walk. In the bottom of the third, Moxley Roesler-Begalke replaced Shayne Walker on the hill, but despite the first at-bat ending in a fly out, Glacier knocked out another six runs before Roesler-Begalke closed the inning with a strikeout.

The fourth saw no progress for either team, and Caden Williams replaced Roesler-Begalke to pitch the first no-hit inning against the Twins, as a fly out to Carvey and one to Offenbecher joined a ground out to first baseman Trey Thompson to close the inning.

The game ended in the top of the fifth after three strikeouts, with Williams left on base from a walk.

Game two saw the Loggers down again in the first inning.

Yet, they were able to hold the Twins to two runs in the bottom of the inning after a fly out to left fielder Cole Murphy — his second caught in the inning — interrupted the Glacier advance.

But though Walker made it to third in the top of the second from his own double and a single to short stop by Trey Thompson, an appeal play by the Twins took Walker out of the game and a pop out from Roesler-Begalke brought Glacier to bat.

The bottom of the second turned into a blowout inning for Glacier, with the Twins’ Quintin Schneider making it to bat and home twice before a pop out was caught by right fielder Ethan Borden to end the inning with a 12-0 Glacier lead.

In the third inning, Carvey replaced Anderson — who had 65 pitches in two innings — on the mound, and the Logger defense was able to halt the Twins for the remainder of the game. But, Libby were unable to change their fortunes at the plate, with Roesler Begalke taking the only base on a walk in the top of the fifth.

The Loggers will play their next league game in Hamilton on Saturday, where they will challenge the Bitterroot Red Sox in a double header. They will head to Kalispell on Monday for another double header against the Lakers ‘A’ team.
