Saturday saw a good day for both Loggers and Trojans as sunshine and warmer weather greeted participants at the Libby Track and Field Invitational.

“They finally got the weather that they deserved, because they’ve been practicing so hard,” said Libby Head Coach Jim May.

Libby’s boys took first place overall, and the girls took second, with several athletes on both teams placing high in multiple events.

No competitor saw more success than Libby freshman Jay Beagle, who took first place in the 100m, 200m and 400m dash. Beagle also anchored the 4x400 relay, taking first place with Logger sophomores John Cheroske, Keith Johnson and Jeff Offenbecher.

But along with Beagle’s success, the day saw some dramatic finishes as a trio of Beagle, Troy junior Hunter Leighty and Libby senior Gavin Strom strode against one another for the top spots in the dashes.

In the 100m dash, Beagle beat out Leighty for first place by only three hundredths of a second. The two also placed a close first and second in the 400m dash.

“It’ll be fun watching those two race throughout the year,” said Troy Head Coach Neil Newton.

Though Leighty beat Strom out for second in the 100m dash, Strom pushed into second over Leighty in the 200m final with only hundredths of a second once again separating the competitors.

Strom also took first in the long jump, with Johnson taking first in the triple jump.

The Lady Loggers came close to the boys in scoring, but faced stiff competition for first overall from Bigfork’s domination of multiple events.

Junior Emma Gruber took first in both the 100m and 300m hurdles, and was part of the 4x400 relay that took second place, along with sophomore Kylee Quinn, junior Lauren Thorstenson and anchored by freshman Olivia Gilliam-Smith.

Thorstenson also took first in the 3,200m run, finishing almost a full minute ahead of the next competitor, and took second in the 1,600m and third in the 800m run.

Emily Mossburg took first in the 100m dash and high jump, with strong second place finishes in both the 200m and 400m dash.

“Just, overall, just the kids supporting each other and taking advantage of a warm day, I’m really happy,” May said.

Despite fielding less than a dozen athletes, Leighty wasn’t the only success for Troy Saturday. Sophomore Ella Pierce placed in multiple events, taking third place in the high jump and setting a personal best time with a fourth place finish in the 100m hurdles.

“It went pretty well,” Newton said. “I think all of the kids can be pretty proud of their efforts here.”

Both the Libby and Troy teams had multiple “personal records” Saturday, and both coaches saw victory in those improvements even for the athletes placing further down the field.

“I know that we are getting better. There were a lot of smiles today, a lot of happy faces,” May said. “It’s nice for them to realize that the hard work they do in practice is starting to pay off.”

“They’ve been working hard,” Newton said. “It’s just good to see them actually get the fruit of that labor.”

Newton noted that with as much of the season as is left, he expects to see Troy’s athletes only continue to improve.

“They’re a good group. We enjoy the heck out of ‘em,” he said.
