The Yaak Valley Forest Council is celebrating 20 years of local conservation and community development work this year with events in the Yaak this weekend.

Executive director Robyn King said via e mail on July 27 “Looking back over the last 20 years and thinking about the work we’ve done to protect, restore and connect our landscapes, our communities and our neighbors has been inspiring. The YVFC always believed that protecting special places as wilderness, recovering our endangered species, maintaining and restoring critical habitat for wildlife and native fish and actively managing our forests weren’t mutually exclusive endeavors. And we still have a lot of work to do. The next 20 years is going to be awesome.”

The non profit will hold it’s annual summer party at it’s new office at the old Sylvanite school at 11896 Yaak River Rd on Sunday, July 30 from 3 p.m.

Open to the public, the event will include local food and beer and a presentation by renowned ecologist Herb Hammond on climate change, inland temperate rainforests, and the values of protecting and restoring these ecosystems for sustainable forests and communities.

In conjunction with the party, on Saturday, July 29, Jessie Grossman and Amy Robinson will lead a seven mile hike to the historic Mt Henry lookout in the Yaak. Hikers will meet at 9:00am in front of the Yaak Mercantile.

The hike is strenuous, Grossman said, and RSVP’s would be appreciated.
