The Lincoln County Community Foundation has been busy recently doing what it does best — giving back to the community. The foundation recently gave grants to the Kootenai Cross County Ski Club, the Harper Erdman VFW Auxiliary 1548 and the Heritage Museum.

They recently gave a grant to the Kootenai Cross Country Ski Club for new skis to supplement their existing program for cross country ski rentals and the Libby Public Schools Outdoor Sports Program. The ski club provides skis and five lessons after school to over 60 students. In addition to the after school program they provide trail maintenance for four trails and ski rentals for the ski season for the community.

They have also awarded a grant to the Harper Erdman VFW Auxiliary 1548 for repair of their dishwasher. A new dishwasher was prohibitive in cost so Jules Mason, manager of the post authored a grant that gave the Auxiliary $1,400 to repair their current one.

“The kitchen is used for many community functions such as fundraisers, funeral dinners, and military service gatherings,” Paula Darko-Hensler of the community foundation said in an email. “The VFW Auxiliary has donated millions of hours and thousands of dollars to benefit many community causes and all members have a firm commitment to carry on the mission of supporting veterans, promoting patriotism and serving the communities in which veterans live.

“Lincoln County Community Foundation is honored to support worthy nonprofit organizations in south Lincoln County,” Darko-Hensler said.

A grant has also been awarded to The Heritage Museum from the community foundation in the amount of $800, to reroof the miner’s cabin with a new cedar roof.

“The museum is run by a group of extremely dedicated volunteers who wish to preserve Libby’s colorful, interesting and varied past,” Darko-Hensler said in an email.

The cabin was donated to the museum by Rosalie Ingram and furnished by the Libby Women’s Club. It serves the purpose of educating visitors and the public by providing an example of what a miner’s cabin would have looked like in the early 1900s.

“Libby is a wonderful place to visit and live and the Lincoln County Community Foundation is especially proud to support the Heritage Museum in their efforts of contributing to the community,” Darko-Hensler said on behalf of the foundation.

They recently also gave $1,000 to the Morrison Elementary Backpack program.
