Gary Keith 'Sarge' Smith

| August 15, 2017 4:00 AM

Gary Keith ‘Sarge’ Smith — a great man, husband and father — left his home in Montana Sunday, Aug. 6, to be with his other fallen soldiers, granddaughter (Roshae’) and beloved pet Callie.

He was born a single child to Carl and Ruth Smith in Louisville, Kentucky. He spent his lifetime honoring his country, perfecting some extraordinary artistic talents and raising and directing an amazing family.

His wife Penni was his one and only love of 53 years and it was and will always be a complete partnership. They traveled the world when Gary joined the Army in 1961 and completed the family by having a daughter Tami (born July 28, 1965 in Maryland) and two sons — Gary (born Dec. 19, 1966 in Colorado) and Brian (born Oct. 9, 1972 in Virginia). He was also a grandfather to five beautiful grandchildren; Roshae’, Francesca, Madison, Abigail and Benjamin.

After a full career (20 years) in the U.S. Army, Gary retired an E-7, Sergeant First Class but never lost his love as a patriot. After a short stint with the USDA Forest Service, which brought them to Troy, he retired and spent the rest of his years loving his wife, family and country. At 6’4”, 240 pounds, Gary was a giant of a man (stronger than most), but truly a nice man to all. He directed his life for almost 74 years and now it is time for this Sergeant to stand down.

“Hooah” Gary and Penni would request that all money for flowers and gifts would best be served as a donation to Kootenai Pets for Life.
