Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks are looking for a poacher who shot and killed a moose near the Cowell Creek area south of Libby over the Sept. 11 weekend.

Game Warden Sergeant Jon Obst said the department recently found a moose killed in the creek area, of which the poacher left everything but its antlers, and is looking for any information related to the poaching.

“Somebody will know something, because it was shot,” Obst said.

Obst added that if the moose had well-shaped paddles, someone could be looking to sell them to an artist or craftsman. The poacher could be facing several charges, including hunting during a closed season and wasted game.

Obst said hunters and county residents alike should be on the lookout for any information that might help FWP find the poacher.

“We couldn’t do our work without the hunters participating in it too,” he said. “And these guys need to play by the rules as well.”

Anyone with information about the poached moose or the missing antlers can relay that information to Obst by calling him at 270-7748 or 1-800-TIP-MONT.
