Three marks set on a fast day at Legends Stadium

It took less than 10 minutes for the first record to be broken at the Archie Roe Invitational track meet on Saturday at Legends Stadium.

Flathead senior Jake Perrin set the pace for a fast day on the track in the first event, pushing the 3,200-meter run in record time. Running with three of the 10 fastest distance athletes in the state, Perrin ran his first mile in 4 minutes, 36 seconds and stretched that into a emphatic victory in 9:13.0, winning by nearly 13 seconds. The mark set the meet record, beating the time set by his older brother, Zach, in 2013 by 0.3 second.

“It was really good,” Jake Perrin said. “Today was a good, hard day. I’m really excited. It was a pretty solid day. It could have been faster.”

His record was one of three records on the day and led to a big victory for the Flathead boys in the team title.

The Glacier boys 400 relay team of Drew Turner, Ethan Larson, Scout Willcut and Aaron Robinson won their race in a record time of 42.86 seconds, topping a 14-year-old record set by Missoula Hellgate.

Shelby’s Kim Parsell bolstered a day of fast distance times, winning the girls 800 in 2:14.03 to beat the old record by more than two seconds.

A few others came close.

Bigfork senior Logan Morley finished the 1,600 with an amazing kick in the last lap to outleg Perrin and pass Hellgate’s Peter Kirgis, finishing in 4:17.81, a second off the record time of Zach Perrin in 2013.

“Going into it I was a little nervous because I already ran the 3,200 and I was a bit tired,” Morley said. “My plan was to stick on to Peter’s tail and just hold on for as long as possible. This is the best race I’ve run. I was happy with it for sure. I was feeling it. That was a perfect race today.”

In the girls distances, Glacier sophomore Annie Hill won the 1,600 and 3,200 but was just off record pace in each. She also ran the anchor leg of the winning 1,600 relay, joining three wins in the field to help the Wolfpack to a team title.

Hill was one of two girls to win twice at the meet, along with Bigfork’s Haile Norred, who won the 200 and 400 and placed third in the 100. Thompson Falls’ Shey Hannum was named the girls outstanding athlete of the meet by scoring all 29 points for the Bluehawks, including a win in the high jump.

Flathead’s Keaton Krantz was named the boys outstanding athlete after winning both the long and triple jumps.

Glacier’s Robinson, a member of the record-setting short relay, won the 200 and the 110 hurdles, coming within half a second of setting a record in the latter. Whitefish’s Luke May nearly reached 200 feet in the javelin, winning the event by 25 feet with a throw of 199-2.
