Don Holcomb

73, of Kalispell

 

Don Wayne Holcomb, son of Joseph and Eula Holcomb, was born Sept. 18, 1942, in St. Louis County, Mo. The family moved to Longview, Wash., in 1948, where Don graduated from R.A. Long High School. 

Shortly after his graduation he followed his brother Ken Holcomb to Libby. There Don established 11 mining claims, roamed the mountains, lived in some very remote places, and became known as quite the mountain man. Don married Karyn French, and they had a son, Josh Holcomb and a daughter, Hannah Holcomb. Don worked for the Forest Service and as a sawyer for various logging companies in Montana and Oregon. During his life, he lived in Ennis, Plains, Libby and Kalispell, as well as Alaska.  

After sustaining work related injuries, he later opened a fly fishing shop, D.W. Holcomb Custom Tied Flies. He loved and lived for fishing and the outdoors. Don enjoyed the last six years of his life in Kalispell, doing what he loved, playing in the woods and spending time with his kids and two grandchildren, Hailey and Garrett Holcomb. Surviving Family members not mentioned: brother Ken Holcomb; sister Beverly Niffenegger; stepson Amos Holcomb and stepdaughter Pam Boothman.                                                                                                               

Don was 73 and passed away Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at the Brendan House in Kalispell due to a heart attack. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at the Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Libby at 1 p.m. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 12, 2016, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
