Letter to the Editor:

I am writing to urge the residents within the Libby School District to support the mill levy proposition to finance the school’s building reserve fund. Supporting the levy request is essential to ensure that students have a safe, well-maintained learning environment. Passage of this levy is also crucial to economic development as communities are often judged by their commitment to local schools.

As a long time educator in Lincoln County, I can attest to the quality of education that is provided to the students in the local communities. I have had the good fortune to work with dedicated, hard-working educators in both Libby and Troy. Libby and Troy’s administrators have worked tirelessly to grow and sustain academic programming without continually asking taxpayers for additional funding through mill levy requests. Creative grant writing has provided necessary funding for educational programs.

Libby is past due for needed maintenance for aging buildings. Students need comfortable classrooms with adequate lighting and reliable heating. Roofs, sidewalks, doors and gym floors need to be replaced and repaired to ensure student and community safety. The buildings are in dire need of critical repairs.

I count myself among the fortunate long term county residents whose children had the advantage of being educated in local schools. Lincoln County continues to be a wonderful place to raise families. I urge every voter to support the levy and send a loud and clear message that the residents of the Libby School District support their schools and families. This support is sure to convey the message that the county is alive, well and open to business. Support of this levy is not only in the best interest of students, but is essential to economic development and community health.
