It was a hard-fought matchup from the opening tip, but at the end of the night the Lady Loggers got the victory over the home team Lady Trojans 43-38.

The Lady Trojans’ offense worked smoothly in the first quarter, as they outscored the Lady Loggers 12-8. Troy’s lead was 10-8 with seconds left in the first quarter when freshman Allie Coldwell picked off a pass and took it the length of the court for an easy layup before the quarter ended.

In the second quarter the Lady Loggers began to exert their will. Hailey Craig hit a 3-pointer at the 6:29 mark to pull the Loggers within one point, but Coldwell answered with another layup to put the Lady Trojans up by two.

Libby responded and tied the game at fourteen points, followed by a pair of Shannon Reny free throws to take a 16-14 advantage with 3:10 to play in the second quarter.

Making one free throw with a trip to the line, the Lady Loggers went up 17-14 at the half.

“Offensively we improved a lot.” Lady Trojans assistant coach Rob Radakovich said. “For the first time we were back-door cutting in our offense and setting good screens, our girls actually had confidence to score.”

Both teams struggled to score early in the third quarter until a Coldwell jumper tied the game at 17 with 4:45 remaining in the third. Libby and Troy traded buckets to bring the score to 19 apiece, until Coldwell intercepted another pass and converted it for two points to give Troy a 21-19 lead.

The Lady Loggers then went on a little run, hitting several buckets. A Shyla Stevenson steal with fifteen seconds left in the quarter put the Lady Loggers up 28-24 headed into the fourth quarter.

Nearing the end of the game, Troy sophomore Allie Brown took the inbounds pass and took off up the court. Brown pulled up and hit a 3-pointer to bring Troy within three points. Brown then intentionally fouled with hopes Troy could get a second chance to tie things up to force overtime. But Libby sank the two free throws to secure the win.

Foul trouble for the Lady Trojans impeded the teams’ chance to get the victory. “The thing that hurt us the most is that Aurora got into foul trouble early and was never able to get going,” Troy assistant coach Radakovich said about the game. “We were making good back door cuts getting the ball to the hoop and our girls just weren’t able to convert. But it was the best game by far for us offensively.”

Libby coach Jim May said, “I like the way we finished the game; we didn’t panic at the end. We had enough defensive stops, controlled the tempo when we got the lead, and shot our free throws well down the stretch.”

May said the rivalry with their neighbor is a healthy one. “Many of our girls know the Troy girls from other areas as well; it’s good competition with good conversation afterwards. We wish them the best of luck for the remainder of their season,” he said.

Lady Trojan Allie Coldwell was the leading scorer in the game with 19 points and Allie Brown added 15 points.

There were several players who contributed points for the Loggers. Leading the way was Shannon Reny who netted 11 points, followed by Hailey Craig’s 9 points.
