Rupert Schertel

96, of Libby

Rupert A. Schertel, 96, of Libby, passed away at his home on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, of natural causes. He was born Oct. 18, 1919, in Port Ludlow, Wash., to Maximillion and Anna (Johanson) Schertel. His earliest years were spent in numerous towns around the west coast.  Rupert was raised in Richmond Beach, Wash., where he graduated from Richmond Beach High School in 1937. He attended the University of Washington for two years and then entered the United States Merchant Marines, serving from 1942 until 1947.

On Nov, 21, 1954 he married Dorcas Mussell at the Faith Assembly Church near Caldwell, Idaho. Dorcas’ brother, David, performed the ceremony. In August of 1963 they moved to Libby. Rupert worked for the forest service as a seasonal worker for two years and then went full time.  He retired in 1985.

Rupert was a member of the National Rifle Association, a long-time member of the Libby Assembly of God Church and was active with the local jail ministry. From 1974 until 2014, Rupert submitted weekly scripture to The Western News. He enjoyed being outdoors and taking care of his land. He had a reputation for “out-walking” everyone. Rupert was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Max Schertel and Sigmund Schertel.

Survivors include his wife, Dorcas Schertel of Libby; children Ruthanne Dolezal (Larry) of Troy, Erik Schertel (Mary) of Libby, Tim Schertel (Becky) of Libby. Ben Schertel (Karen) of Libby, Susan Warne (Jami) of Pendleton, Ore.; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and sister Annabelle Marks of Port Angeles, Wash.
