THS students begin 10th annual Wings effort

| March 21, 2014 9:46 AM

Letter to the Editor,

On March 14, Troy High School embarked on its 10th annual Wings fundraiser. What started off a decade ago as a modest plan to collect pocket change to help local cancer patients with the expenses associated with travel needed to obtain radiation and chemotherapy treatment has developed into an annual contest between classes to see who can raise the most money for this worthy local charity.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Wings Regional Cancer Support is a non-profit organization created to offer individuals in our community financial assistance with out-of-pocket expenses associated with cancer treatment.

Recognizing the financial burden placed on families facing a cancer diagnosis, Wings provides monetary support to qualified individuals to assist with expenses such as housing, transportation and meals.

To date, Troy students have raised $34,828.94. That’s right: nearly $35,000 has been donated to Wings because of the good work that our students have done to make it happen.

In an effort not to conflict with the efforts of adult volunteers who go door-to-door every May for the annual “Wings Walk,”  we will instruct our students not to solicit donations.

Rather, the emphasis will be placed on fundraising activities such as car washes, bake sales, hosted dinners, service projects and other activities, goods or services the students can organize and perform in order to raise money.

The contest between classes will conclude on Friday, March 28, with a check presentation assembly to be held at the Troy High School auditorium at 2 p.m.

The class that raises the most money will earn a field trip for its members some time in early April.

Of course, community members who choose to “help” Troy High School students by donating to their class fund or fundraisers are always welcome to do so. Please, make your tax-deductible check payable to Wings of Lincoln County. However, we respectfully request that you politely decline any request for a door-to-door donation.

We understand that many parents, teachers and other community members have been instrumental in helping our students succeed in our annual fundraising effort.

On behalf of all of us here at Troy High School, please accept my heartfelt thanks for continuing to do so.
