Elizabeth S. Baker, 96

| July 11, 2014 12:26 PM

Elizabeth S. Baker passed away at age 96 on July 4, 2014, at Libby Care Center. She was born July 24, 1917, on the family farm in Lewis County, Mo., to Jenny Isobel Reiter and Martin Lawrence Schaefer. She was the oldest of four siblings.

Betty graduated from high school in 1935 and was always proud that she played on the girls basketball team. She attended a business college in Quincy, Ill., and worked 30 years as a secretary and bookkeeper for Ayers Oil Company in Canton, Mo.

Betty married Ernest F. Baker on Nov. 22, 1939, in Quincy, Ill. They had two daughters and were married 42 wonderful years, until Ernie’s death in 1981. Shortly after, Betty moved to Arizona where she enjoyed an active retirement travelling, golfing, doing arts and crafts and spoiling grandchildren. She made once-a-year trips to Montana, so she could spoil those grandchildren growing up there.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Gladys and Norma Jean, and her husband Ernie. She is survived by her brother Larry Schaefer and wife Barb of Hot Springs, Ark.; daughters Amy Bumpass and husband David of Arizona, and Becky Stovall of Libby; six grandchildren Kelly, Jeff, Robin, Ryan and Ethan; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and interment will be held at a later date in Canton, Mo. Local arrangements by Schnackenberg Funeral Home.
