Marion shooting

leaves man dead

KALISPELL — Flathead County authorities say a Sunday morning shooting in Marion left one man dead and that another has been taken into custody.

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office tells the Flathead Beacon that Mark Ames has been taken into custody and is being held at the Flathead County Detention Center on suspicion of deliberate homicide.

Police say the shooting took place about 1:45 a.m. outside a duplex owned by one of the men.

Police say Ames’ wife rented one of the apartments and the victim lived in the other apartment.

Police say an altercation took place outside the duplex and that Ames fired multiple rounds into the victim’s apartment.

Police say the two men then confronted each other outside the apartments, where Ames fatally shot the other man. Police say both men were armed.

Lost snowmobilers

found on mountain

WEST YELLOWSTONE — The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says rescuers guided to safety five snowmobilers lost on Two Top Mountain along the Idaho-Montana border.

Authorities say the snowmobilers called Idaho officials for help about 4:15 p.m. Saturday saying they were lost due to white-out conditions.

Rescuers located them using GPS coordinates from the caller’s cellphone, and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office in Montana launched a search.

Authorities say rescuers found the snowmobilers and escorted them to West Yellowstone.

The five Montana snowmobilers included a couple from Helena and three people from Bozeman. One was checked by medical personnel and released. The others didn’t need medical attention.
