It is love of money, not money, that is the root of evil

I am sending this letter in response to the letter in your edition of Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, written by Mr. Steven Lodman of Libby.

Sir, I can understand your amusement at putting “In God We Trust” on United States currency if your quote from 1 Timothy in the Christian Bible had been correct. Many people make that mistake, both Christian and non-Christian.

Whether or not a person is a Christian, care should be taken when using quotes from the Bible. Getting them right is very important! I am often at fault in this myself. One time this was pointed out to me on this same passage.

The correct quote on this passage from 1 Timothy 6:10, in the New King James Bible is: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.” As you can see, it is not the money but the love of money and it is not the only root of evils but one of many.

Money, if used properly, can be the source of much good. It can help feed the hungry, clothe the naked, spread the word of God’s love for all and many other good things.
