It took a while for the weather to catch up with spring cleaning desires, but Troy’s youth will help residents kick into gear during Thursday’s Community Service Day.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., high school freshmen and sophomores will perform highway cleanup while upperclassmen will split into groups at the town museum, park and cemetery. Students will meet afterword at the museum lawn for a hot dog barbeque provided by Rosauers, the City of Troy and the school.

Elementary students will get an early start, leaving class Tuesday to clean areas such as the Timber Beast Disc Golf Course and railroad crossing.

“Hopefully we will be able to make this an annual event,” Mayor Darren Coldwell said. “We’re trying to pick up a little Troy pride.”

The idea of a citywide clean up day gathered momentum after Troy resident Shawna Kelsey emailed Coldwell about the idea. Following her suggestion, people looking to part ways with any heavy items are encouraged to call the city to coordinate a removal by city workers.
