In seeking a healthy, happy community, Shawna Kelsey of the Yaak Valley Forest Council has plans underway for a Farmer’s Market in Troy to begin in May.

Kelsey has a mountain of details to sort out, but she is prepared to organize at least six growers of tasty fruits and vegetables.

“I would like it to be a place people think of and go to regularly,” she said. “A gathering place for the community. We might even get live music and make it more than just vegetables.”

Kelsey has a half-dozen interested growers – mostly hobby gardeners – and would like to see affordable, plentiful produce on the plates of Lincoln County residents.

She is the education and community development liaison for the Yaak Valley Forest Council, and she is tasked with improving not only the physical health of area residents, but the health of the community as a whole.

Things are going well, she says.

“I’m excited,” Kelsey said. “I’ve had lots of positive feedback.”

But starting something new and trying to change things isn’t easy.

“It’s a gamble for everyone involved,” she said. “But everyone jumping on board is eager to get started.”

Kelsey said she is open to the idea of crafts, but would rather make it about produce and other healthy treats.

Libby growers and producers are welcome to join and may reach Kelsey at 295-9756.
