District is recognized for its improved lunches

Libby Elementary School was recognized recently for earning a Bronze Award in the USDA’s Healthier School Challenge program.

The program recognizes schools that are creating healthy environments by promoting better nutrition and physical activities.

“Libby Elementary is one of 27 schools in Montana to receive the award,” said Katie Bark, a registered dietitian with the Office of Public Instruction. “Libby Elementary has become a model for other schools. We congratulate you.”

Last year, Libby schools began an effort to offer better meals for its students, namely offering more fruits, vegetables and a salad bar.

Bark commended the district’s partnership with two local restaurants to provide meals for Libby Elementary School. Bark cited Terry Cummings of Henry’s Restaurant and Frank Hendrickson of Kootenai Catering for developing meals that offer a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, a weekly legume, whole grains and lean protein choices to promote healthy eating habits.

Superintendent K.W. Maki thanked the board, committees and the partnership that led to the award.

“Libby School District 4 is extremely proud of our nutritional and educational teams. The dedication they demonstrated in achieving this award is truly appreciated.”

Bark specifically acknowledged Lois Thatcher, along with the local restaurateurs, for their efforts in creating new recipes and finding healthy products to develop menus meeting the guidelines.

“Libby’s unique process of utilizing local restaurants for food production greatly impacted the health of the school as well as the community as a whole,” Bark said.
