Heading for the Barn Bill Dorrington, right, retiring chief of the Libby Volunteer Fire Department, tugs on the lanyard to toll the highly polished bell symbolic of completion of a fire run. The bell, an anachronism in this age of wailing sirens and flashing colored lights, was removed by the firemen from the 1954 Mack fire truck, which they hope to replace soon, and mounted for permanent display in the fire hall. In bygone days, it was traditional to sound a siren as a warning signal en route to a fire. After the blaze was controlled, clanging of the bell announced that the fire apparatus was returning to the station. Photo from the Oct. 12, 1972, files of The Western News.
