Chili Cook-off at Heritage Museum offers right 'mix'

| October 9, 2012 11:35 AM

Come and get it!

Those are the words of Laurie Mari, of the Heritage Museum, about the Seventh Annual Chili Cook-off Saturday at the museum.

Here’s an event that should be a lot of fun, is close to home and offers a chance to enjoy a great fall favorite, too.

It will be a chance to browse the museum grounds and exhibits and savor some great chili, as well.

The Heritage Museum is a great place not only to learn something about Libby and Lincoln County, but it always seems I see something different every time I go. Neat stuff!

Gates will open at 7:30 a.m. for chili cooks, who will then have until noon to come up with their best blend of special ingredients, to hopefully win top prize for their culinary skills.

Judging begins at noon and is based on presentation, aroma, consistency, flavor and aftertaste in two categories: Texas Style — No Beans (Meat with tomato base, chilies and seasonings) and All Other Types.

Prizes of $100 cash for first place, $50 Rosauers gift card for second place and $25 cash for third place.

Prize sponsors are Edward Jones, Frontier Communications, Rosauers, Loveless Realty and DeShazer-Ryan Realty.

Laurie says sampling by the public will begin immediately following the judging.

Said Laurie: “For $4 you can purchase a sampling kit with enough sampling cups for each chili, cornbread, and a ballot for voting for your favorite.

“The “People’s Choice” winner will receive a special award in addition to bragging rights,” Laurie said.

Desserts will be available for those with a sweet tooth.

Also,  “Beyond Help,” featuring Lee Tonner, Mike Powell and Tim Harcourt, will be performing.

It’ll be a great event to bring the children for an educational day right here in Libby.

Also, Saturday is the Paint It Pink Glacier Bank-sponsored 5K to 10K Fun Run/Walk. This event begins at 9 a.m. at the St. John’s parking lot and benefits the hospital’s early breast-cancer detection program.

Here’s a chance to run (or walk) and then later recharge at the Chili Cook-off!
